Olympic dreams start at the Y!

2002.09_HighRidgeYMCA_03s_hrCome and join the fun at the Cortland County Family YMCA for session 8 fall programs for youth and families!  Engage and empower your little Olympian this fall through our swimming, gymnastics and karate programming.  The Y will be hosting an open house and Free swim this Saturday September 10 from 1-3 p.m. to showcase some of our great programming and facility options!  Demonstrations for karate and gymnastics are scheduled.

The Y is pleased to offer the longest running gymnastics program in the county, directed by Coach Sharon Shattuck.  Progressive classes are offered Monday through Thursday and Saturday with Pre-School and toddler programs, upstairs at the JM McDonald Sports Complex.  For those with more advanced skills we offer advanced programming and tumbling, but for those who have what it takes and have a competitive nature, gymnasts may become a member of our Comet’s Gymnastics Team.  Gymnastics is much more than tumbling, and can offer strength, flexibility and confidence for any sport.  Do you have what it takes to become the next great gymnast?

Koie-Kan Karate has held a dojo at the Cortland YMCA for 36 years and is a mixture of Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Judo, Kubodo (weapons) Kung-Fu and many other Martial Arts.  It is an authentic traditional Martial art and is taught by Nidan, 2nd degree black belt Peter Korolov and assisted by Shodan Carter O’Gorman.  Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday with youth karate (ages 7-12) starting at 6:30 p.m. and Adult (13+) at 7:30 p.m.  Costs vary with age and Y membership status. You do not need to be a member to participate, and payments are monthly.

Indoor Swimming lessons were pioneered by the YMCA and continue here in Cortland.  Twice a week classes are held every Monday and Wednesday at 4 to 4:30 p.m. or 4:30 to 5 p.m. based on level. Once a week classes are held Tuesday (4-5 p.m.) or Saturdays (10:15-11:15 a.m.) based on level.   Lessons are taught from age 6 months and up! Private lesson instruction is also available for all ages. Full class listing with levels are viewable online at www.cortlandymca.org.

Are you the fastest swimmer in the county?  The Stingers swim team is looking for you!  The Stingers practice up to 5 days a week (Monday-Thursday nights, and Saturday morning) and are actively recruiting for new swimmers.  Try the first week FREE next week, September 12-17th.  YMCA membership is required to be a part of swim team.

The Cortland Y is proud to continue to offer an exciting opportunity in our swimming lessons programming.  The Y offers any 7-year old in Cortland County the opportunity to take swimming lessons FREE until their 8th birthday.  Lesson times will coincide with our regular scheduled classes.

In addition to our traditional offerings, The Y offers a great variety of aerobics classes, free to Y members and only a nominal fee for community members.  Options range from Pilates to twice a week yoga, HIIT (high intensity intervals) to low intensity water classes to a hyper Aqua Amp class and step/interval training to cycling!  We truly have options for everyone!  If group classes are not for you, we have amazing personal trainers on staff to show you how to achieve your individual fitness goals!

The Cortland County Family YMCA has been proudly serving Cortland and the surrounding community for the past 148 years.  We strive for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility.
